FAQ

  1. What is a Sorority?
A sorority is a group of girls who share a common bond of sisterhood. It is a group of friends as well as family that do charity work together, as well as have fun together.
  2. Why should I join?
It is an amazing way to meet new people, from all different backgrounds and interests. There are fun events such as parties, girls nights and dances, as well as the opportunity to give back to the community. It is a great support system academically, and is also a great way to learn useful skills and gain confidence in yourself.
  3. How much of my time will it take up?
The time committment is very manageable; you are only required to attend 1 meeting a week (usually about an hour in length) and a few events every month. If you wish to put more time in, that is certainly possible through holding positions and attending more events.
  4. How do I get involved?
We have a 2 week period every semester (September and January) known as ‘Rush’ where we are recruiting new members. We have events throughout these 2 weeks for girls to meet us and get a taste of Sorority life, to decide if it is for them. In order to join, one must be attending a University (unfortunately it must be an accredited university, not a college) and must attend at least 3 events during the 2 week period. Visit our Rush page for more information, or visit our Facebook page. You can also email any questions to rushibx@hotmail.com
  5. Do you haze?
No. We do not believe in hazing. If at any point during pledgeship or rushing you felt uncomfortable with anything, it would be stopped immediately.
  6. Will my schooling suffer?
School comes first. We do have minimum GPA requirements, and we encourage anyone who is strugglng to take the time they need to concentrate on school. We do also have Scholastic Chairs for each university who can help you or direct you to those who can.
  7. Does it cost anything?
We do have ‘dues’ that are charged each semester. This money is simply used to continue to have events to make Iota Beta Chi fun and productive. However, if money is a concern (as it is for many of us already a part of the sorority!) there are many options available. We do have the lowest dues of any Greek Organization in Halifax, and do have payment plans and fundraising options as well. Never worry about dues! We do not want money to be what prevents anyone from being a part of our Sorority!
  8. What if I am shy?
Many of us were very shy when we first joined, and the sorority is very accepting and a great way to learn to be less shy. If you are nervous to come to an event, bring a friend with you. The more the merrier! You can also feel free to email ahead with questions, add any of us to facebook, meet one of us 1 on 1 ahead of time… whatever makes you feel comfortable! We’re happy to help, because we understand that it can be intimidating to step into something brand new.
  9. Is there any obligation to join if I come to an event?
Not at all. We encourage everyone to come out and see. Even if you don’t think sorority life is for you, we love to have people come out to events and have fun just the same. Even if you do pledge, you are always able to defer to another semester if you find you don’t have enough time, or if it is not for you.
  10. Is there an age limit?
Not at all. As long as you are in university, we are happy to have you! We have had mature students join before, as well as people in every year of their university education. So whether in your first or fifth year, everyone is welcome to come out.
